There are many causes of vertigo. The elderly frequently complain of this symptom and it is estimated to be present in 30% of people over the age of 65. Vertigo may be caused by changes in the position of the head, alteration of blood pressure due to changes in postures, disturbance of balance due to a problem in the inner ear and, more frequently, cervical disorders. There are also other causes of more serious pathologies or more serious medical conditions, but these are more rare. However it is important to ensure that these are not present from the anamnesis, before proceeding with the physical examination. These patients should be referred to the general practitioner or specialist.

When vertigo or dizziness appear to be of cervical origin it is important to confirm the relationship between the two factors. This is easily determined by a competent clinician and the McKenzie assessment is excellent in determining this connection. The detailed examination investigates the relationship between cervical pain and vertigo, information on previous episodes and checks that there are no other causes. If vertigo is associated with cervical pain with regard to onset, frequency and severity are influenced by the daily movements of the neck. If there are no other characteristics or problems, the cause is probably cervical and patients will benefit from the therapy.
