It is the result of a dislocation of material normally contained in the intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus) that emerges from the fibrous ring that contains it and comes into contact with the nerve structures. Hernia is frequently associated with a previous degeneration of the disc and is therefore normally preceded by episodes of low back pain and / or sciatica. These patients often do not have lumbar pain, but an acute deformity, a reduction in muscle strength, constant pain and serious difficulties both with movements and positions, especially walking. In the acute phase, the pain is very intense and sometimes the resort to surgery is the only solution; however some patients manage to avoid the intervention by modifying their lifestyle and with the passage of time they improve.
